Reds sign Affeldt

Reports are that the Reds have come to a preliminary agreement with FA pitcher Jeremy Affeldt on a one year, $3M deal.

From Ken Rosenthal:

“Affeldt, 28, will compete for a spot in the Reds’ rotation after spending all of last season as a reliever with the Rockies. He has started in the past and the Reds’ far greater need is in the rotation, where they are unsettled beyond right-handers Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo.

Affeldt enjoyed a long-awaited breakthrough with the Rockies last season, going 4-3 with a 3.51 ERA in 59 innings. He is 25-27 with a 4.74 ERA in 286 career appearances, including 42 starts.”

Competition is good. The more guys we have competing for the starting spots in the rotation, the better. That said, I guess this guy looks like a somewhat decent pickup, considering who’s available. We’ll have to trust our scouting department on this on and having faith that Affeldt can be a starter again.

This kind of signing probably says a lot about the faith they have in Homer Bailey and Johnny Cueto for the long term. That’s a good thing in my eyes.

Agreed, Affeldt should provide good competition for the younger guys vying for the 4th and 5th starter spots.

And even if Affeldt doesn’t make the rotation, he had a career year last year in Colorado working out of the bullpen. The Reds could always use a solid 6th-7th inning guy.

EXACTLY, if he doesn’t work out as a starter, the pen can always use the help. at his age, it’s getting to be make or break in the bigs – so, it’s a good move for the reds. since it’s a one year contract, the risk is not huge for the Reds, but there could be a decent upside. at least on paper, this improves are team. not as much as most fans were probably looking for, but improvement none the less.
