Mariah vs. Mallory

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

It’s a showdown of epic proportions. Who’s ceremonial first pitch was worse: pop-sensation Mariah Carey or Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory?

Mariah was in Japan this week throwing out the first pitch at the Tokyo Dome. She must have gotten her heels caught in the dirt during the delivery. Or maybe that jacket was a little too snug and she couldn’t get the full range of motion she needed in her arm.

Here’s the “crafty right-hander” Mark Mallory delivering the first pickoff attempt of a runner at first base pitch before the Reds Opening Day game in 2007. Take notice of the umpire making the gesture as if he’s thrown Mallory out of the game. Also, Eric Davis’ reaction after the pitch is priceless. He seems genuinely amazed that the ball was so far off target.

Worst ceremonial first pitch: Mariah or Mallory? OMGReds decides.

Junior’s pursuit

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Check out what’s front and center on SportsLine … Danny Knobler writes about how Jay Bruce is stealing the spotlight from Junior’s pursuit of 600 home runs. It’s an interesting read. And it’s in what they call a “combo tease” with a piece by Scott Miller about how this is exactly how Junior likes it – nice and quiet.

Jeff Brantley and his beret
OMGreds.com west coast correspondent mike_r whipped up this bad-boy after Marty and Thom discussed how good Mr. Brantley must look in a beret. I missed that action on the radio… but I can only imagine it was some good stuff.

mike_r is also single-handedly the Reds’ west coast Reds Killer. He has personally attended… I think… 9 Reds losses to teams on the other side of the country. Zero wins. He even got to take in 14 of 18 innings of that last game in San Diego. Ouch. Regardless, he’s got some photos and commentary for your enjoyment. Sorry we didn’t post sooner. I guess it was tonight’s loss to the Buc-Ohs and Mr. Dumatrait that inspired us.

Jay Bruce Shaving Cream Pie
Folks, you knew it was going to be a special night. If you didn’t go to ballpark and get a walk-up ticket, you were watching at home. Something special was going to happen – our savior is playing!

Okay, maybe Jay Bruce isn’t the Reds’ savior, but damn, the future looks pretty good.

Oh, and how about that blast by Dunn? MONSTA! Just as monsta as the David Ross delivered double-barreled pie-in-the-face to Bruce. See above.

Jay Bruce
The Reds brass must have read Dave’s Corey Patterson post last week, because they’ve finally decided to call up Jay Bruce.

From Mark Sheldon:

Bruce, considered the consensus top prospect in all of professional baseball, will be promoted to the Reds from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday and make his Major League debut in Cincinnati against the Pirates.

In 49 games with Louisville this season, Bruce led the International League with a .364 batting average and 67 hits. The outfielder also had 10 home runs, 37 RBIs and an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.023.

Not sure what happens to Patterson (the Reds are on the hook for $3 mil) or who takes over the leadoff spot (whoever they put there can’t possibly do any worse than Patterson’s .242 OBP, including his 0-8 performance on Sunday).

Needless to say, OMGReds is pretty excited about this announcement.

While I’m at it …

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

I meant to post this earlier today, but did anyone else think it was pretty boneheaded to have Bronson Arroyo bat in a 5-5 game in the 6th with a man on when you know you’re about to take him out of the game anyway? Isn’t the idea to pinch hit for him if his spot comes out and you’re planning on yanking him? I understand that he was just trying to move the runner over with a bunt (they got the lead runner at second, as it turns out) but why not send Hatteberg or pretty much your best bat off the bench (it’s late enough in the game and it’s tied) to try to retake the lead. If someone understood Dusty’s logic, I’d love to hear an explanation.

Corey Patterson

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Enough’s enough. I know he’s still young and every once in a while he does something impressive that makes you think he should be starting in center field but he just shouldn’t be. Not only does this guy never walk he barely ever even takes a pitch! Every time he’s up there it looks like he’s swinging for the fences (and he’s only got four home runs) and he flies out. Perfect example of “How hard are we really trying to win this year.” I mean, I don’t know how you could possibly think it’s a better idea having Corey Patterson in the lineup than Jay Bruce. It’s getting old, and I’m tired of it.

First Look: Dunn ’80s Bobblehead

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Adam Dunn Bobblehead
Well, Adam Dunn will now officially take over for Bronson Arroyo as the butt of all clubhouse jokes.

Don JohnsonThe Reds have posted a preview image of the bobblehead being given away on “1980s-themed Adam Dunn Bobblehead Night”. The Big Donkey is doing his best to channel Don Johnson with the white jacket and gold chain, complete with medallion. Actually, take that back… not Don Johnson… the bobblehead looks like Spencer, from MTV’s “The Hills”. MFingOMG, indeed.

Could this be one of the worst bobbleheads in MLB history? Or, could it be the best? Pick one up for yourself and your mom on Saturday, July 26. The Rockies will be in town that night laughing at Dunn and the Reds.

Too bad the 1980s-themed lunchbox being given away the next day is only for kids… that has some serious potential.

Brandon Phillips Bobblehead

Brandon Phillips Bobblehead
It ended up being a great day for Brandon Phillips Bobblehead day. BP went 2 for 4 with an RBI, the Reds came back and won and the rain pretty much held off. The helmet sundaes and beers after the game rocked, of course. We made it a full downtown day by heading to Shanghai Mamma’s for dinner and stopped by Fountain Square to watch a little bit of The Natural.
