Antonio Bastardo

I just thought it was funny that Joey Votto homered off some dude named Bastardo in the second inning today.

BTW, is today Votto and the others’ last game before the WBC or are they playing against the Red Sox and/or Yankees this weekend?

Double E and Voltron kickin’ it in the dugout – great photo. Now, where is that photo of Tom Browning coaching up the High School Musical kids at GABP? THAT’S what you all want to see, right?

New scoreboard at GABP

GABP new scoreboard
The new scoreboard has been installed at GABP and they were testing it today and this evening. Either side of the HUGE full-color HD display are blank right now, just waiting for more boards to be installed. The photo doesn’t do it much justice – it looks fantastic. Can’t wait to see replays of Brandon Phillips flashing his Gold Glove out at 2nd base this season.

Also – the 4192 Club is completely torn out right now. It’s just down to the bare bones. Looks like that renovation might come down to the wire and finish just in time for opening day.

Votto

Nice piece from DDN’s Hal McCoy on our man Votto and his preparation for the World Baseball Classic. By the way, OMGReds.com will offer exclusive coverage of Votto’s appearance for the Canadian squad against Team USA in the WBC March 7.

Bernie Stowe and Reds alumni
Nice video on Cincinnati.com on the Stowe family and the Reds clubhouse. I would embed it, but the damn thing auto-plays, and that gets pretty annoying when the post starts moving down the page. Actually, that’s always annoying.

The MaskCam video is fun too.

Ah, you can read about ol’ Leatherpants everywhere else! How about some stuff about the Reds and uniforms! Yeah! So, over at our new favorite blog, Uni Watch, they have a nice roundup of MLB photo day around spring training camps, including a few photos of our Reds.

Brandon Phillips and his goatBP, seriously, the goat is getting out of control. Tell me you are growing it until we get into the playoffs, or some other silly reason? Or, Griffey put Rogaine in your chinstrap as a joke and you can’t keep it reigned in? Junior is like that.

Nelson

A top baseball prospect from the Dominican Republic who received a $1.4 million signing bonus from the Washington Nationals lied about his age and name in what team president Stan Kasten called “an elaborate scheme.”

In July 2006, to much fanfare, the Nationals signed a 16-year-old shortstop named Esmailyn “Smiley” Gonzalez and held a news conference at which general manager Jim Bowden compared the player to Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. Still known as Gonzalez, he led the rookie-level Gulf Coast League with a .343 batting average in 2008 and was honored as the league’s MVP.

But while the Nationals have been listing his date of birth as Sept. 21, 1989 – which would make him 19 now – Kasten said Wednesday that a Major League Baseball investigation determined Gonzalez is actually Carlos David Alvarez Lugo, born in November 1985 – meaning he is really 23.

“This is going to have serious repercussions,” said Kasten, who spoke to reporters after SI.com first reported on Gonzalez/Lugo. “I have people examining all possible avenues of recourse, with regards to any legal and financial concerns.”

WashingtonPost.com has a transcript of Stan Kasten’s remarks to the media. He seems pretty steamed.

The funny thing, too, is that this same prospect (whatever his name is) was at the center of the FBI and MLB investigation you may recall concerning accusations of skimming money from bonuses to Latin American prospects (the story was also broken, as far as I know, by SI). So, basically, if they did skim money from this guy’s bonus, they were skimming from a guy they thought was 16 who was really 20 at the time.

And, IF any of those accusations were true, how ticked can the Nationals really be at a guy who lied about his age but only received a small portion of the $1.4 million bonus they said they gave him?

Jose Rijo, a special assistant to Bowden, was credited with spotting Gonzalez in the Dominican about two years before the Nationals signed him.

“I loved him from the beginning,” Rijo said Wednesday in the home clubhouse at Space Coast Stadium, where the Nationals hold spring training.

“In the Dominican, you never know. You just never know anymore. That (stuff has) been going on for so long,” Rijo said of players lying about their ages.

The Nelson pic (above) is more directed toward Leatherpants than Rijo, the 1990 World Series MVP and a great Red admired by the OMGReds.com staff for his outstanding comeback in 2001 and 2002.

Nice fuel, too, for firejimbowden.blogspot.com.

That site, by the way, might just get its wish, according to a Thomas Boswell column in the Washington Post.

Port Charlotte is no longer a dump

From Hal McCoy’s blog on DDN’s Web site:

The exhibition season start Wednesday with the Reds visiting Tampa Bay at their refurbished digs at Port Charlotte.

The Rays are worried they might run out of baseballs. There is a retaining pond behind the left field fence that is a refuge for wildlife and is designated a preserve. It has an alligator or two, poisonous snakes, birds and a whole lot of baseballs that can’t be retrieved.

Junior back with the M’s

Ken Griffey Jr
Looks like Ken Griffey Jr. is heading back to Seattle.

Sources have indicated that Griffey’s tide turned shortly after he became upset with the fact that The Atlanta-Journal Constitution was reporting that he’d already decided to play for the Braves.

You know, it’s always been out there that Jr has always been a little sensitive. But, to say that an article pissed Jr. off and forced his decision one way or another seems pretty stupid to me.

UPDATE: Baseball card blogger and Braves fan, Cardboard Junkie, had a few choice words about the change in direction for Junior.

Junior

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Junior has chosen to sign with the Braves, according to a person close to the veteran star and familiar with the ongoing negotiations.

What’s interesting is he picked the Braves over the Mariners, according to the AJC, despite the fact that the two teams made similar offers, believed to be in the range of $2 million guaranteed, with incentives tied to staying healthy and getting a lot of plate appearances.

The Reds host the Braves April 24-26 to kick off their second homestand of the season.
