Home Movies

Check out this recently posted video footage on YouTube. It’s a home movie from a Reds/Cardinals game at Busch Stadium in the late 70s. Haven’t been able to figure out exactly what year it was filmed in, let alone the game. At the 3:03 mark, you can see Mario Soto down by the bullpen and Pete Rose Johnny Bench hit the home run in the beginning, so it was either 1977 or 1978 1977 or after. Can any sleuths out there figure out what the date of this game?

The scoreboard is show a few times and you can see messages about upcoming promotions with the day of July 20th… so that’s a starting point.

While we do see highlights from game played in the ’70s quite often, this is still pretty neat to see. It’s documentation of a trip to the ballpark by a fan. It’s their perspective and not a broadcast TV station’s angle. The lack of sound just adds to home movie aspect and makes it that much more special.

I’ll try my hand at the detective work.

It appears that the scoreboard says that the upcoming promotion was Sunday July 20. 7/20 fell on a Sunday in 1975 & 1980, and not in between. This info confused me at first, as Soto was not a Red until 1977, and Rose was not a Red in 1980.

It’s blurry video, so it’s tough to see. But wasn’t it Johnny Bench that hit the homer? Looks like #5, and sure wasn’t Pete’s hustle on the homerun trot.

I can make out a couple of innings on the scoreboard at one point as well, where each team scored a run in the 1st, and the Reds scored 1 in the 2nd (on a Bench HR). Given all this, I am guessing that it is this game, on June 13, 1980.

Ah! You’re right – Bench did hit that homer. Duh. 1980 would make sense in that case. Great work on the sleuthing from there!

  3. Great find, guys.

I’m not sure I’d slap my logo on that restoration job, if I was the Home Video Depot. Just sayin.

I always read “Depot” as “Dee Pot”… it’s not helping their cause, that’s for sure.

I love watching vintage home movies. The bonus of seeing Mario Soto in the ‘pen was awesome.
