The Reds have officially announced the 2012 Spring Showcase game to be played at GABP on Tuesday, April 3. The final game of spring training will pit your 2012 Reds against top players from the organization’s minor league affiliates. Very reasonably-priced tickets go on sale Saturday, February 4 at reds.com.
We’ll be there with bells on, of course. We made the trip up to Dayton in 2009 nice for the inaugural “Futures” game and had a blast. It was beautiful out that day too, which is always a plus.
Most interesting to us is the on-field gear the teams will be sporting that evening – check the jersey Reds prospect Billy Hamiliton modeled for us today at the Reds Caravan stop in Hamilton, Ohio.
Before we caught up with Billy today, we first saw the jerseys last night at the Reds Caravan Hot Stove show at the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. During the broadcast, we noticed a black Reds batting practice-style Ryan LaMarre jersey being carried around by a Reds staffer. Puzzled, we wondered if it was a new BP jersey, possibly for road games. The Reds answered our questions today and confirmed that the black jerseys will be worn by the Reds minor leaguers during the Spring Showcase game. Perfect use for them, if you ask us, and much like the black Futures jerseys the young guys wore during the 2009 edition.
The black jersey has “Futures” across the chest similar to the Reds official batting practice jerseys. The back features white numerals with a red drop-shadow trim. It appears to be an “Authentic” Majestic Cool Base jersey, using the same materials and construction as the current official batting practice tops.
It’s a sharp looking jersey and Reds fans that dig black will love it. Many will likely loathe it. We think the Spring Showcase is a perfect chance to bust something like this out. It’s a higher-quality jersey than the one used in 2009 and will probably be hot little items if auctioned off for charity after the game.
