The Nasty Boys: Norm Charlton, Randy Myers, Rob Dibble

It’s Gonna Get Nasty

Many serious Reds collectors will tell you the same thing: “I need Randy Myers”. Well, maybe not need him personally, but need his signature on something – a ball, bat, photo, etc. – to complete a part of their collection. Myers has always been an elusive autograph for many, many fans.

Myers’ interestingly fickle signing habits makes his upcoming appearance with his Nasty Boys teammates, Norm Charlton and Rob Dibble, at Sports Gallery an extremely exclusive engagement. The signing, being put on by Sports Gallery (our events calendar sponsor) and CEI Sports, will take place on Wednesday, June 12th from 6-8pm at their location in West Chester.

We’re wondering – Have all three Nasty Boys ever made an appearance together like this before? If it has happened before, it must have been a very long time ago as we’re unaware of any events like this taking place the past few years. Wow.

So, this may be the shot you’ve been looking for to complete that autograph project, but it won’t come cheap, or automatically. The signing will set you back $200 for autographs from all three (reasonable, considering Myers’ rare availability) and tickets are limited to 150 and just one per household. You may get the item of your choice signed. Sports Gallery has instituted a lottery system to handle the demand. According to Sports Gallery, you can submit two entries to better your chances. Here are a few more details from the registration page:

Sports Gallery is excited to announce we have 150 exclusive autograph tickets, at $200 each, for this premiere, once in a lifetime “Nasty Boys” event.

Each lottery winner will be notified directly by phone or email immediately upon selection — Good Luck!

Per athletes and management request, all other information will be announced to the lucky lottery winners as it becomes available.

It appears that lottery winners will have the choice to either have their items signed in-person or by drop-off or mail-in.

Make sure you’re in the mix by registering here. Good luck!

The Nasty Boys will be at Sports Gallery on June 12, 2013

Moeller Card Show updates

We wanted to pass along the latest information from one of our favorite events — the Moeller Sports Card Show, being held at Moller High School April 26th, 27th & 28th.

According to the email newsletter that was sent out earlier today, jockey Steve Cauthen has cancelled his appearance and Big Red Machine pitcher Don Gullet’s scheduled appearance looks doubtful. For the Cauthen fans out there, Cincy Card Shows was able to hold a private signing with Cauthen and signed items will be available for purchase at the Moeller show.

To make up the cancellations, Eric Davis has been added to the lineup and will be signing from 1:30 – 3:30pm on Saturday and 10:30am – 12:30pm on Sunday. Prices will be $20 on a small flat or a ball, $30 on a large item or equipment. A free inscription is included.

The spring Moeller Show lineup will now include Johnny Bench, Don Gullet (TBD), Norm Charlton, Arron Pryor, Will McEaney, Jack Billingham and Eric Davis. Times, pricing and more details can be found at cincycardshows.com.

Along with the celebrity appearances and fantastic dealer tables, Cincy Cards Shows will be raffling off a painting of Johnny Bench by local sports artist Brent Naughton. Here are the details:

Some of you have seen his work at the Moeller shows before or maybe you have seen his artwork elsewhere. Brent Naughton has created an awesome 11×14 painting of Johnny Bench. You can see this at www.facebook.com/cincycardshows During the show split the pot tickets will be sold for the artwork. The artwork will be signed by Johnny Bench and given away at 3pm on Saturday. The winner that is pulled must pick up the artwork from the show by 4pm on Sunday. The way the split the pot works is that tickets will be sold $10 each or 3 for $25. Half of the money will go to Brent to recoup his costs on the piece. The other half will be donated to Moeller High School. Thanks to Brent for making this possible.

Information from Cincy Card Shows:

Thanks for all your support over the last few signings with Cozart and Frazier as we look to keep bringing in guys for you to meet. With hearing of Pedro Borbon’s passing we have put together an event that has already started gaining a lot of attention. Ken Broo has already picked up the story and will play Pedro Borbon’s interview that we set up for him in April on his show Sunday as well as talk to Steve about Monday nights event. The following is what went out this morning to local news and radio.

Cincinnati, June 07, 2012: As most of you know by now the City of Cincinnati lost a great man this week with the passing of Pedro Borbon. Pedro was a great friend to us and had done several autograph signings over the past few years at our Moeller High School sports card and memorabilia shows. We were lucky enough to be able to bring him in a little over a month ago April 27th and April 28th to spend time with us and the many collectors that showed up to meet him.

When Pedro came in to town for us 5 years ago for the first time he asked if we could pay him the same amount whether he drove or took us up on a plane ticket. We agreed and he packed up the family and drove 1800 miles from the Mexico border with his wife Maria and kids. With this in mind as soon as we heard about his passing we decided we were going to do a fund raiser for Maria and the kids.

Monday, June 11th at Moeller High School we will be having a sports memorabilia sale and Homer Bailey autograph signing. Included in the sale will be Pedro Borbon signed 8×10′s that he did for us at his last signing. The sale will begin at 6:00 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. and the Homer Bailey signing will go from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A portion of all sales will go to the Borbon family. Moeller High School is located at 9001 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

At the event we will also accept donations for the family. If anyone can’t attend the event but would still like to contribute to the Borbon family you can send a check make out to Maria Borbon to Steve Schell, 601 Eagle View Drive, Mason, Ohio 45040.

Thank you for everyone’s time and please let us know if you need any other information.

We hope to see you tomorrow Monday JUNE 11th!

For more information you can check out:

On a side note, I had the pleasure of meeting Pedro on several occasions the past few years and he couldn’t have been any nicer. I even made it to his recent autograph signing at the Moeller Card Show back in April. It was great to see him, nice to get an autograph and wonderful to just to say hello. In 2010, I met his family at the Reds Hall of Fame Gala. They are a wonderful family and it was an honor getting to know them a little bit. I was saddened to hear that we lost Pedro last week and behalf of all of OMGreds, our thoughts and prayers go out to the Borbon family.

Keeping you in the know

Since the start of this blog, we’ve tried to keep you informed about Reds and baseball-related events around Cincinnati. Nothing frustrated us more than hearing about something that already happened. What? Dave Parker was signing autographs at the SupeRx in Kenwood? Damn, we would have been there! Exactly.

With that, we announce a new addition to OMGreds.com: The OMGreds Events calendar!

Instead of doing even round-up posts and having them get buried after a few updates, we’ve created a dedicated page to list events like meet & greets, player appearances, autograph signings and more. We do our best to stay on top of things, but if you know about an event that is not listed that you think should be, drop us a line at ballsout at omgreds dot com.

Sports Gallery

Awesomeness

You’ll also notice that our Events Calendar is sponsored by Sports Gallery. We are proud to have them as the first-ever sponsor on OMGreds. Located in West Chester, Ohio, Sports Gallery has a phenomenal selection of Reds and baseball collectables, memorabilia, sports cards and more. They also have quality signing events with current and former Reds and other Cincinnati sports icons. We encourage you to support their business. You can find them online at www.asportsgallery.com.

So, check out the darn Events calendar already! Information about several great autograph signings this week with Mat Latos, Zack Cozart, Jay Bruce and Johnny Cueto are listed!

The Reds Authentics booth at GABP. Located behind section 117 on the Terrace Level.

Every season the Reds set out to improve the fan experience. Creative ticket packages, new ballpark food, expanded beer offerings, stadium enhancements and more are always part of the efforts. This season, there is one program that is getting a revamp and expansion that has OMGreds pretty excited: Reds Authentics. After being introduced at Redsfest 2012, the program is ready to take off this season. OMGreds sat down with Reds Authentics Manager Jon Cline to talk about the program and what fans can expect this season.

Let’s back up a bit though.

Selling game-used memorabilia has been a Reds program for decades. From the team stores located on 6th and Walnut to 5th and Race and now the Majest Team Store at GABP, Reds fans have had an opportunities to pick up a broken bat, used jersey and even pants from their favorite players. Of course, Redsfest has always been a prime outlet for picking up the coveted pieces of memorabilia that fans are seeking. Not being serious collectors, even a few of us at OMGreds have picked up a few things at past Redsfests. Danny Ray Herrea batting practice jersey for $40! Hello?!

Reds fans have had varying access to the goods, but the Reds are now placing a larger emphasis on the Authentics Department, making greater use of MLB’s Authentication (Sports Illustrated looks into MLB Authentication) servies as well as opening up a wider range of offerings so more fans have a chance to bring home something special.

So what is Reds Authentics? Game-used, autographed and authenticated bats, balls, jerseys, bases and more. Items can purchased by on game days at GABP in the Reds Authentics Booth (pictured at the top of the post), online during Reds Charity Auctions (link to current auction) or by contacting Jon Cline, Reds Authentics Manager, at (513) 765-7097. Jon is more than happy to take requests for specific items.

So, not only can you buy “authentic” memorabilia from a trusted source, but you can feel good about your purchases as well – All proceeds from the sale of Reds Authentics benefit Reds Community fund.

REDS AUTHENTICS BOOTH

Game-used baseballs at the Reds Authentics booth

Game-used baseballs

You don’t have to wait until Redsfest or hit the Reds Team Store at just the right time anymore. Reds Authentics will have a booth set up at every Reds home game this season. Not only will they be selling a revolving inventory of jerseys, bats, balls, bases and more, they will be selling memorabilia collected from that very game. Items will be collected between innings from an official MLB authenticator and available at the booth later in the game. So, you can be at the game and walk out with a souvenir FROM THAT GAME. Amazing.

Taking your son to his first game? Sharing nine innings with your pops? Trying to impress the boss? Commemorating an appearance on the Kiss Cam with your beau? Reds Authentics is how you get it done.

Of course, the items that you purchase are well documented for your assurance. Game-used items come with the official MLB Authentication tamper-proof sticker, but items also come with a certificate of authenticity or a label that lists the item name, date, opponent played and what inning that event happened. Yes, that game-used ball you picked up was thrown by Johnny Cueto to Ryan Braun in first inning of such and such game and was a ball in the dirt. Those are the kind of details you can expect and a great part of the overall story of your momento.

If you have purchased an MLB Authenticated item, you can utilize the MLB.com Referencing System to look up that particular item and receive the exact item explanation in the MLB Authenticated item database. Pretty cool.

A SAMPLING OF ITEMS
Let’s take a look at a few examples from the Reds Authentics inventory, shall we? Jon was happy to pull a few things from the Authentics closet for us to get a peak out during out visit. Here are a few highlights…

2012 Opening Day base

2012 Opening Day base

2012 Opening Night base with commemorative jewels

2012 Opening Night base with commemorative jewels

We learned that bases are pretty hot items these days. Bases start at $150 for non-premium games and go up from there. They’re fun to hang on your wall, use as a bar-stool top or even get framed. Pretty unique items, for sure!

Drew Stubbs' 2011 Reds clubhouse chair

Drew Stubbs' 2011 Reds clubhouse chair

The Reds clubhouse upgraded the seating arrangements for the players in 2012 and a few of the old clubhouse chairs are still available. This particular one is Drew Stubb’s chair from the 2011 season and is paired with his locker tag from the same season.

Joey Votto cracked baseball bat with autograph

Joey Votto cracked baseball bat with autograph

This Joey Votto cracked bat is drool-worthy. We had to wipe the slobber from our chins after this photo was taken. Check out how the signature that is stamped onto the bat is actually a full, every letter showing, signature. Beauty!

Paul Janish game-used batting helmet

Paul Janish game-used batting helmet

Game-used helmets! Totally. You know one of these would look great on your mantle or your head.

Jay Bruce game-used cracked baseball bat with autograph

Jay Bruce game-used cracked baseball bat with autograph

After we got over the shock from the Votto bat, we moved onto a Jay Bruce bat. This one, also cracked, is special. See, Jay doesn’t use naturally stained bats any more – he’s rocking the jet black Louisville Sluggers, like Joey.

Chris Heisey autographed print in custom frame

These custom prints are solid. Complete with autographs and a custom frame, there are several players available. Really nice pieces.

Joey Votto collage with signature

This print is also super-rad. A nicely-designed collage complete with Joey’s signature in silver and custom frame job. In addition to Votto, Reds Authentics will also have Jay Bruce, Mat Latos and Johnny Cueto prints available.

2010 Civil Right Game on deck circle

2010 Civil Right Game on deck circle

This is a thing of beauty. You know you need this in your man cave – An on-deck circle used in the Civil Rights Games hosted at Great American Ballpark. At least we think it was used for both. Either way, it’s a one-of-a-kind item… and it’s authenticated, of course!

The jersey rack at the Reds Authentics Booth

The jersey rack at the Reds Authentics Booth

A shot of the jersey rack at the Reds Authentics Booth at GABP. The booth had its first night of business during the Reds Spring Showcase on April 3, 2012. In addition to the rack of jerseys, there were game-used bats, batting helmets, bases, line-up cards, manager line-up cards, custom framed items, plenty of game-used baseballs and more. Also available in the later innings were game-used baseballs from that night’s Spring Showcase game.

You can be sure there’ll be plenty of special loot for sale all season long. Make sure you stop by and check things out. If anything, it’s pretty fun window shopping for any baseball fan.

Cara Van Damme!

This was better than the mall.

This was better than the mall.

OMGreds hit the road again this year to chase the annual Reds Caravan. The past few years we’ve trekked up to Columbus for the stop at Polaris Fashion Place, but this time around we hit the Dayton stop at the National Museum of the USAF on Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

The Dayton stop was the final destination of the Northern Leg of the Caravan tour and featured Thom Brennaman, Phil Castellini, Walt Jocketty, Devin Mesoraco, Tom Browning, Ryan LaMarre and Mr. Redlegs.

And what a venue for this event. Not only was there plenty of room for a great crowd, but you’re surrounded by military history and the famous jets that you had on posters in your room as an 8-year-old. You know, the F-22, that was right below the Ferrari Testarossa and right next to Paula Abdul.

Autographs from Ryan LaMarre, Tom Browning, Devin Mesoraco, Thom Brennaman and Walt Jocketty

As for the program, it was to the point. A short Q&A (Peppered mostly with questions for Walt about why the Reds gave up so much for Mat Latos) preceded an autograph session. There were quite a few folks in front of us during the autograph session, but when we finally reached the stage all the guys were still very personable and accommodating. After a couple of days on the road and meeting a bunch of crazies like us, you would imagine they might be a little weary of the fans, but they were great. It was very much appreciated by the OMGcrew.

Make sure you also catch the Northern Tour wrap-up post over at Better Off Red.

A few snaps of the event…

Tracy Jones wants to send you an autographed baseball card

Tracy Jones autographed baseball cards

Tracy wants to sign a baseball card for you too

Local radio personality and former Cincinnati Red Tracy Jones is giving back to his fans. Yesterday afternoon on his radio show, Tracy declared he will autograph and mail a baseball card of his own to any fan that drop him an email with their address. How about we see how many baseball cards of himself he really has and all get in on this? You never know, you might end up getting this beautiful 1988 Score card, or even a totally bitchin’ 1988 Sporflix. It’s worth a shot, right?

To get in on this action, shoot an email with your name and address to tracy@700wlw.com. Make sure you stop back to OMGreds and let us know if you “scored.”

UPDATE: We heard that Tracy announced he is shutting down his autograph program down this afternoon (12/15). Ohhhhh wellllllll.

Fierce Redsfest punches OMGreds in face repeatedly

The Mr. Reds ornaments from PNC were some of the best Redsfest swag

The Mr. Reds ornaments from PNC were some of the best Redsfest swag

It did. It felt good. Again, please?

If you’re looking for the important news and stuff that came out of Redsfest, our guys over at Redleg Nation have a nice recap, as does Red Hot Mamma and Red Reporter has a flurry of links.

Alright, on to the unimportant items at hand…

The 2011 edition of Redsfest is the 6th ‘fest in a row that the OMGreds crew has dropped in. Once again, we were impressed with the Reds’ efforts. Every year they make tweaks to improve the fan experience and from our standpoint, this year’s were definitely going in the right direction.

Pregame
Before we headed over to The Duke, we grabbed some Skyline and woofed down a pair of helmet 3-ways. It was the only way to start the weekend off right.

The Floor
Widening some of the floor isles were the big upgrade this year. We have no doubt they helped with traffic, but things were still pretty congested. Even with a couple hundred fans leaving the floor to go up stairs for Elite Pass autographs, not a lot was going to help with a record crowd (23,737) attending the event. From what we saw, the main congestion points were around the screens that displayed autograph and photo booth appearances and Autograph C – the season ticket holder-only line. That line was usually double up on itself with fans lining up early in anticipation of the upcoming, not-yet-unannounced autograph sessions.

The relocation of the Hall of Fame area was a nice change and likely eased some of the traffic problems from past years. On the other hand, the autograph line within the Hall of Fame area was often messy and seemingly hard for the HOF staff to wrangle. Plus, the line usually blocked some of the exhibits like the World Series trophies from fans that just wanted to meander through and take photos. The HOF might want to consider beefing up the corrals in that area for next year.

Autographs
OMG loves themselves some autographs. We usually hit the auto lines pretty hard and this year was no exception. We had season ticket holder passes, so we were usually in the mess around Autograph C. It got pretty messy a few times, especially when Jay Bruce and Aroldis Chapman were scheduled. But hey, those guys are pretty popular, so we expect nothing less.

New to Redsfest was a hard stop at 225 people for each autograph opportunity. While a few people probably went home with less autographs than in years past, it seemed like a good move. It did get players in and out on time – we weren’t in a session that had a player show up more than a minute late. There were times in the past when players were up to 10 or 15 minutes late. Can’t say for sure if the cap directly affected punctuality, but we did notice the positive change. Additionally, with the cut at 225, you never had a situation where you hopped in line and the player had to bail when their time was up. If you were in line, your autograph was pretty much guaranteed – Nice. The one thing this did prevent was the “double-up,” where you could go through one line and hop in another during the same hour session. Maybe it was possible, but we weren’t able to pull it off at any point. No biggie, just sayin’.

The Elite Pass/Lottery system was a great upgrade in our opinion. To be completely open, the three of us that registered for the lottery all won a session – two for Scott Rolen and one for Jay Bruce. Walking into Redsfest knowing that you have a guaranteed autograph from one of the team’s stars was pretty fun. If we didn’t win, we would have still known we had a chance in one of the regular lines and that’s a pretty fair deal. The system that was set up to check ID against your personalized autograph ticket seemed well executed. Plus, the personalization of the ticket made the experience just a little more special. I’m keeping my ticket as a souvenir with my Jay Bruce autographed 2011 Topps Heritage.

At the Reds Hall of Fame & Museum area, things were a bit messy like we mentioned before. We jumped over there from time-to-time, but generally avoided it partially because of the traffic, and partly because most of us had gotten autographs from many of the HOF’s guests in the past. Those guys do rule though ;^)

For the first time, a few of us took advantage of CEI Sports’ autograph opportunity in the memorabilia section. Big Red Machine players Bobby Tolan and Pat Darcy were guests on Saturday, both requiring a purchased ticket, $15 for Tolan and $10 for Darcy. I had Tolan sign a ’72 Topps and Darcy a ’76 Topps. Tell you what, the ’76 Darcy was hard to track down. I couldn’t find one before Redsfest, and only found one in the memorabilia area this weekend. Darcy’s line was pretty darn long when he started too. We heard that he doesn’t do many shows.

Main Stage Entertainment
Can’t say that we sat down and watched much of the main stage entertainment over the weekend. We were either walking around, in an autograph line or chatting it up with friends around the Better Off Red lounge. So, for the most part we missed the details of what went on. Even so, I left Friday night with Montell Jordan’s “This is how we do it” stuck in my head. “Ever since I was a lowercase g, now I’m a big G”… over and over and over in my head. Funky G & the Groove Machine really laid it down, didn’t they? “If you were from where I’m from, you would know.”

Yep.

Once Broson started melting teenage faces late on Saturday, we knew the end was near. Tell you what, I can’t hate on Bronson. Dude’s got some talent. Plus, outside of the Goo Good Dolls, we share a pretty similar taste in music. At the same time, I think he’s been on stage in a musical capacity each of the past few Redsfests. Might be time to move on to something else.

Game-Used Memorabilia
We aren’t big players in the game-used arena, but we do love to window shop and maybe snag a deal if there’s one to be had. I walked away with a spring training game-used Danny Ray Herrera BP style jersey and OMGpaul picked up a game-used Fred Lewis away jersey. We spent $105 between the two of us and likely bought the two least expensive jerseys in the joint. For the most part, we were priced out of anything the was of interest. A couple of Sam LeCure jerseys coming in at $400 and a Dave Sappelt was tipping the scales at $500. Sheesh. Is that really the market for those? Nothing was reduced at the end of the day Saturday as it has been in the past and it looked like a substantial amount of game-used merch was still on the racks as Redsfest drew to a close. We missed the auctions Friday night and we’re curious to how those went. The lots seemed pretty sweet. We’re sure they did well. We heard that OMGreds got a shot out from Mr. LeCure during his auction! Wish we could have been there for that. Sam is the best.

Having the game-used “Authentics” section in its own large booth was a great move. Its inclusion with the team store last year didn’t seem to work to well. Nice upgrade.

Oh, and if those Corky Miller jerseys weren’t “size: blanket” I totally would have picked one up. How awesome would it be to rock the 37? I do like to were the few game-used things I have and Danny Ray’s jersey fits me really well. Plus, I’ll put his jersey into “instant classic” territory. Some other guys you have to wait a few years before it becomes cool to wear to GABP. Danny Ray has instant wearability. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. Fred Lewis? The case is still open on that one.

While we were mostly checking out jerseys, we strolled by the autographed baseballs. $140 for a Joey Votto? Out of our range, y’all.

Reds Caravan Bus
We got the chance to hop on the Caravan bus. It’s pretty luxurious and was well stocked with beer and Twizzlers. We resisted the urge to take any treats, but we did take it out for a quick spin.

Memorabilia Area
It’s hard to judge this from year-to-year, but the memorabilia area was outstanding this year. Price points for everyone, lots of fun, unique Reds items and plenty of things to grab quickly to get autographed while at Redsfest. We did an extensive tour around the area and will highlight some of our finds in a separate post or two later this week.

Reds Community Fund Mystery Autographed Baseballs
YES! The Reds Community Fund know how to push OMGreds’ buttons. OMGpaul and I picked up two at $20/ball on Friday night, scoring Jordan Smith (me) and Sam LeCure (Paul). We couldn’t resist dipping in again on Saturday and ended up with two 2010 All-Stars – Arthur Rhodes (me) and Joey Votto (Paul). Both were a bit smudged, but we were notified before we bought that would be the case. Are you kidding us? We’ll take those! Fun stuff, please do again.

Bootleg Jersey Mania
OMG. It’s getting out of hand. We saw so many bootleg jerseys running around this weekend. Cost-wise, we get it. MLB “Authentic” gear is expensive. Even the replica items are not cheap. But, those bootlegs look so bad. Horrible construction, janky materials, incorrect typefaces, completely wrong designs for certain players. A pinstriped, sleeveless Joey Votto Reds jersey? Come on! He never wore that design! All that aside, it’s supporting illegal businesses. They make knock-off crap that looks horrible and are breaking the law. How can someone support that? Again, we get it with the cost of the legit stuff. It’s not cheap. But if you really want a nice Johnny Bench jersey, save up your dough for a real Mitchell & Ness one, or use a coupon code for MLBshop.com. There are deals to be had, you just have to look.

Okay, off the soapbox.

Mr. Red
We like him. More on that later.

Reds Ice Cream!
UDF Homemade Reds Grand Slam Ice Cream was announced at Redsfest. It should be rolling that our around Opening Day next year. Peanut butter ice cream with peanut butter cups and chocolate fudge. We didn’t get to try it at Redsfest, but it sounds pretty strong. Can’t wait.

Also
With so many things happening at Redsfest, we didn’t get to take them all in. Let us know how your experience was – especially if you were around the kids areas and the Wiffleball field. We’re sure everyone had a blast over there as well.

In General
All-in-all we had a great time. Not only is it fun to interact with players and folks that work for the Reds, but it’s also a time when we catch up with our friends and OMG fans. Meeting folks that like what we do is humbling and motivating. Thank you all. That goes out to all our conversations on Twitter as well. It’s super-fun to bring you our perspective from Redsfest. A big thanks to all of you, and we’ll see at GABP in 2012.

I mean, really. Really?

Pete Rose 'Never bet on baseball' inscribed autographed baseball card

Wow

None of us should be surprised, right?

So get this, Leaf (they’re still around?) has released an entire set of baseball cards featuring Pete Rose. AN ENTIRE SET. Entitled Pete Rose Legacy, the set features autographs with plenty of inscriptions and game-used pieces (a bat and a game-used Montreal Expos jersey were used). If you’re a Pete Rose freak, sounds like you’re going to love this set. Each box includes at least one Rose autograph, so you’re guaranteed a little sum sum from Charlie Hustle.

Hits* from the Pete Rose Legacy set have been hitting** eBay with the “Never bet on baseball” inscription being the grand-daddy of them all, if you ask us. Sure, there cards that are even more scare (1/1s), but this inscription takes the cake.

The folks over a Top Prospect Alert Minor League Blog (say that 3x fast) have compiled a list of in-scripted cards that have hit eBay recently.

By the way, get this – One lucky collector will pull a redemption card for a personal hitting lesson with Pete Rose. We also hear that you get to go hat shopping with Pete too!

Q&A with Chris Williams (Part 1 of 2)

Warren Haneline and Chris Williams

Warren Haneline (left) and Chris Williams of Motorsports Authentics chat in a NASCAR merchandise trailer at Kentucky Speedway.

Chris Williams is VP of Motorsports Authentics, the trackside leader of licensed apparel for the teams in NASCAR. Given our common interests in collecting and the Reds, we touched base with Chris through a mutual friend and asked him a few questions. Here is the first half of our Q&A …

OMGReds: How did you get started with your memorabilia business?

CW: I was working for Dale Sr. when he owned all of his apparel and the company that sold his product, known as Sports Image. I started collecting at an early age. My dad was the manager at Martinsville Speedway and I was able to get some stuff that your average person wasn’t subject to. I first remember collecting postcards the drivers would hand out during the weekend, and then those press packages the media would get…

I was a three-sport athlete at Drewry Mason High School and was looking to go play college ball … After high school and while taking some courses in college, the race was in Martinsville and I was trying to work to pay for things … I wasn’t doing too well but was giving it a good try; juggling 3 jobs, a wife and a baby on the way … and needed the cash … The souvenir trailers that were there weren’t allowed on track property at that time. They were parked at the top of the street that went down to the track, directly across from my Dad’s house. Well luck would have it that it rained on race day. Rain in Martinsville means mud, mud means stuck … I had gotten up to Dad’s and saw where the trailers were having troubles. I approached the man about helping get his trailer out, he seemed to be struggling, so I got a tractor, chains and some boards and got ‘em out … Well afterwards he asked if I wanted to come work for him selling souvenirs … I liked collecting but had never sold, went home, talked it over with my wife and decided to take that chance; glad I did.

OMGReds: What types of memorabilia do you specialize in? What are your favorite types of items, and with which items is the demand the greatest among consumers in your opinion? What types of memorabilia would you recommend investing in if you had to choose?

CW: Anything can be memorable and people collect for a lot of different reasons … Some do it to show pride and wear it; some collect for the memory of being somewhere or with someone at that time … some want to show their favorite team and player support. They all hold special bonds and memories … Some though do it for a profit or investment as time ages the item. Whatever a person’s reasons, memorabilia has become a part of business in America.

I personally would collect anything that would not perish and has some type of limited quantities in numbers … I would invest smartly in signed product that is authenticated by player and/or author, especially if it is rare and affordable … Most things in those categories ripen with age.

OMGReds: What are your most prized items in your personal collection?

CW: I have a collection of various items … I have baseballs signed from Brooks Robinson, Griffey, Hank Aaron, Bench, Foster, Morgan, Rose, Reggie Jackson and it goes on … I have some helmets from Griffey and Cal Ripken Jr. … Jerseys from a vast assortment of players from Bench to A-Rod …

As far as racing, I have some driver helmets in which my pride would be Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s helmet and uniform. I have some other uniforms from Harvick and Jeff Gordon as well. I have some rare trophies from the older NASCAR races and I have a rare collection of some guns as well.

I have a replica Elvis jumpsuit as well … It’s cool. I tried it on, not so good I looked like the later years of Elvis, if you know what I am saying …

—————

Be on the lookout for the second half of our Q&A with Chris, where we discuss the future of card collecting and your beloved Cincinnati Reds. Did we mention that Chris is a life-long Reds fan?

Dude, how much can you Bench?

‘Mayor’ Signing: The Loot

2004 Bowman Heritage Sean Casey
I received my loot back today from the signing Sean Casey did for his charitable foundation, Casey’s Clubhouse. Couldn’t be any happier. Sean laid down some beautiful signatures on the three baseball cards I sent in – 2004 Bowman (above), 2005 Topps Heritage and a 2001 Bowman Heritage. At $5 per autograph on baseball cards, this was a fantastic deal. Since all the proceeds were going to Sean’s charity, it was a no-brainer. I only wish I would have sent in a few more items.

For photos of the signing, click here. There are some sweet pieces of memorabilia in there!

The promoter, Kevin, has indicated that Sean is interested in doing another signing after the baseball season starts. We’ll make sure to keep you posted.

Also, we noticed that Sean was at last weekend’s PirateFest. That’s totally cool with us, but what do we need to do to get him to Redsfest 2011?
