BP high socks fantastic while they lasted

By now you know we LOVE the stirrups and take notice of the high socks, especially when they’re red. Sorry for no screengrab – the DVR wouldn’t cooperate – but Brandon Phillips – who wasn’t in the starting lineup for the Reds’ 5-3 come-from-behind win in Houston – was wearing the socks high in the Reds’ dugout during the game. Kelch and Welsh, in fact, pointed them (the socks) out and mentioned that Phillips had worn them high once in a game – once. (Thanks, Johnny Dangerously fans.) Turns out that one time BP did so, his mother didn’t approve. Hey, gotta listen to Mom, without exception. When Phillips appeared in the game in the 9th, the pantlegs were down and socks entirely concealed.

Welsh’s “Huh?” remark of the game

As we’ve said before, we are Chris Welsh fans and we enjoy the analysis and insight he provides during the broadcast despite his questionable fashion sense. That said, about 2 to 5 times each game, he says something that makes us respond with either “Huh?” or “Wha?” Tonight, our pick is his mention of the rumor he read on HardBallTalk.com TODAY (Wednesday) that Victorino-for-Ondrusek straight up was nixed by the Reds. You know, the thing Paul Daugherty wrote about Monday morning and we read on Cincinnati.Com two days ago? Yeah.

Homer vs. Chris Johnson

Anyone see Chris Johnson giving Homer Bailey an earful after he struck out in the 6th? Couldn’t tell what Homer was saying if anything (probably something) because he had his back to us (TV audience) but Johnson directed some choice words Homer’s way. Just lip-reading but we thought we made out “punk ass” and “bitch” from Johnson. Just making sure you saw that too.

Hero of the day

Loved hearing Drew Stubbs bust out the “It’s a different hero every night” cliche. Nice, Drew, but you do realize you were the hero last night as well. Alright, two straight ninth-inning rallies you’ve highlighted, you’re forgiven.

Gotta give Xavier Paul a shoutout as well for that huge double he had to lead off the ninth. BIG time. Nice pleasant surprise pickup he’s been.

Are you ready for Mr. Red?

Mr. Red

Likely the first mascot version of Mr. Red. (Rhodes/Klumpe Reds Hall of Fame Collection)

I believe we are.

Five years after the merciful retiring of alien baby Mr. Red, he’s being brought back into the mascot fold next season. Rounding out the Reds mascot roster at four, Mr. Red is being re-introduced at this year’s Redsfest – likely looking much, much better after years of Billy Blanks Tae Bo and some serious facial reconstruction. New Mr. Red will be presented at 6pm Friday night on the Redsfest main stage.

Alien Mr. Red had a run from 1997-2006 serving as the teams only mascot until 2003 when he was joined by “lovable” Gapper. In 2007, Mr. Red was was supplanted by Mr. Redlegs and the lovely Rosie Red rounded out the mix in 2008.

With the resurrection of Mr. Red, fans will be looking forward to even more mascot hijinx around GABP.

So, how about that photo of Mr. Red from the early 70s? We’re not sure of the date on that one, but we’d guess 1973ish? Just a hunch. While that incarnation is a complete rip of the original Mr. Met, all of us Reds fans know that Mr. Red/Mr. Redlegs has been around for quite a while.

Speaking of dudes running around with paper mache baseballs on their heads, check out how Reds fan Tim Shafer crashed the 1975 National League Championship celebration parade dressed in a home-made Mr. Red costume. He was OMGreds before there was OMGreds. We salute you, Mr. Shafer!

Stirrup alert!

Sam LeCure sporting the stirrups

This is nuts! Sam LeCure sporting the stirrups - Uni Watch will be proud

OMGreds favorite, Sam LeCure, was spotted rockin’ the ‘rup Monday night against the Mets. While Sam didn’t get a chance to flash the new hosiery on the mound, he was keepin’ it real out in the bullpen. Said Sam on Twitter about the socks:

#unity, indeed

All we can say is, “Keep it up, dood.” While the everyday stirrup would be a welcome sight for us nerds, Sam’s little nod to that night’s starting pitcher is nice twist. Also, did you know that he has a mustache? Well, he does.

Thanks to @SwarlesBarkley_ for letting us use the pic!

Speaking of Sam, if you haven’t read “LeCure, Twitter, and the Meaning of Life” over at Dreaming of Heroes, please do. You’ll be glad you did.

A look at the Reds Throwback uniform to be used on Wednesday, June 15 vs the Dodgers. The uniform is modeled after their 1944 road design

The Reds are tossing it back to 1944 when the Dodgers host them on Wednesday, June 15th for one of LA’s “Throwback Days.” 3:10pm EST start, by the way.

In what started as a fan-vote promotion during the off-season, has become quite a uniform-enthusisat’s treat this season. Fans had the choice of several options: Uniforms from 1911, 1931 or 1944, obviously choosing the ’44 design based on blue satin uniforms worn during that era by the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1940′S ROAD ALTERNATE UNIFORM
After nearly 50,000 votes, this uniform edged out the 1911 Road option by less than 2,000 votes. Though the original uniform worn in the 1940s was made of a highly reflective satin fabric to make it more visible under the lights for night games, the 2011 throwback jerseys will be made of the same material and maintain the same feel as those worn by the Dodgers throughout the season. The jerseys will be available for purchase by fans at Dodger Stadium beginning on the first date they are worn, April 21, when the Dodgers welcome Atlanta to Chavez Ravine. That date marks the anniversary of the franchise’s first victory, which also came against the Braves in 1890.

While the uniforms for the Reds will be produced by Majestic, uniforms for the previous two Throwback Days (against the Brave and Cubs, respectively) were made by Bobcat Athletic. UniWatch did a fantastic profile on Bob Halfacre, who runs Bobcat Athletic, about landing the gig and producing prototypes and the first two rounds of uniforms for the Dodgers.

As for the Reds duds, we’re excited to see them on the field. While the 1944 road uniform is fairly conservative in design, they’ll look solid. They lack the pizzaz that, say, a 1978 Padres uniform might bring to the diamond, and are certainly not as exciting as the previous two “Throwback Days” opponents – the Braves and the Cubs. The blue cap with red bill should really make the look, though. We’re glad that the Dodgers chose to keep the Reds’ look in the ’40s to match the Brooklyn uniforms and didn’t go outside of the era just to get a more interesting visual match-up.

Also, no word yet on the hosiery the Reds will be wearing. Most of the team wears pants “style de pajama” (notable detractors include Mike Leake and Bill Bray), but the Braves did rock stirrups as a team during the first throwback game. There’s always hope, right?

The Reds are indicating that more photos of the Reds uniforms will be posted once the team gets to Los Angeles on Monday. No word on whether there jerseys will be available in the Reds Team Shop, but we would venture to guess they won’t be, as this promotion has been completely organized and paid for by the Dodgers. Game-used uniforms for both teams will be auctioned off by the Dodgers.

By the way, the 1944 Reds finished 89-65, good for 3rd place in the National League behind Pittsburgh and St. Louis. The Cardinals went on the beat the St. Louis Browns in the World Series. 1944 was also the debut of one Mr. Joseph Henry Nuxhall.

Speaking of throwbacks, did you see the Padres/Nationals game Saturday night? Beautiful!

UPDATE: Reds fans will get another throwback treat when they travel to Milwalkee and play in the 6th Annual Negro Leagues Tribute Game on Saturday, July 9. The Brewers will be wearing Milwaukee Bears reproductions – maybe these?. From brewers.com:

In tribute to one of the greatest baseball traditions ever established in sports, the two teams will honor the legendary Negro Leagues and its players by wearing vintage uniforms from the Milwaukee Bears and Cincinnati Tigers Negro Leagues teams.

The Reds will also don tribute uniforms, honoring the 1937 Cincinnati Tigers who wore these beauties.

Stirrups? Yes please.

Mike Leake with the stirrups

This is correct.

Mike Leake with the stirrups

Stirrups

Mike Leake came back from his short stint in AAA with something to prove on the mound, but also some new hosiery stylings. We don’t exactly know why Mike decided to dig his stirrups out of the bottom of the sock drawer for tonights game, but we do know that he’s looking good, and when you look good, you play good.

This isn’t the first time Mike has been spotted taking it back to the old school in a Reds uniform. Before his MLB debut, he appeared in the 2009 Arizona Fall League All-Star game and broke out the stirrups. We were jazzed, of course.

This may be the first Reds stirrup sighting this season. Now, let’s not confuse stirrups with high socks, folks. While the high-sock is respectable, the stirrup is in a whole other category. A very “cool” and/or “neat” category is you ask us. Last year we saw some stirrupin’ from Orlando “Florida” Cabrera, Johnny “Rotten” Cueto and during the 2009 season, Joey “Ramon” Votto. Did we miss anyone? Oh… us.

Gotta say though, Mike has certainly worn them the best.

Long live the stirrup.

Why we love D.J. Carrasco

DJ and his fly stirrups

It’s not just because he threw a wild pitch that allowed Paul Janish to score that was followed by a two-run single by Scott Rolen in the 9th. It’s that he was rocking some fly stirrups while he did so.
