It’s Time I Get a New Hat

1995 Reds hat - time for a new one

1995 Reds hat - time for a new one

[Editor's note: This entry comes from OMGreds' West Coat Coorespondent, Mike. He was in San Deigo this past weekend to see a clinch, but alas it wasn't in the cards.]

Way back in 1995 the Reds were on the verge of clinching their first NL Central title when I hatched a brilliant idea. “I’m going to buy a Reds cap every year they win the division or make the playoffs.” I said to myself while watching the OJ trial from my apartment in Fort Wayne.

1995

1995

I bought the hat for what I think was $18 or $20 from Koch Sporting Goods on a trip home one weekend. I wrote “1995″ on the inside bill with a sharpie so i’d remember from the stacks of hats I was sure to pile up what glorious playoff it was from.

Memories of 1990 were still fresh and it seemed reasonable in a new division with the lowly Cubs, Brewers and Pirates (sans Bonds) we could nail down a few titles here and there. I wore my hat proudly to while driving my car to what passed for a hill in Fort Wayne so I could pick up 700 WLW to listen to the NLDS while on dinner break. Side note: Games were televised regionally that year so the Reds were not shown b/c the Indians were on at the same time. Side side note. I hate the Indians.

The Reds took care of the Dodgers and I was able to attend games 1 and 2 of the NLCS against the Braves (I skipped the Million Man March to attend). Well, the Braves destroyed the no-hitting Reds with Javy Lopez personally delivering the death-blow in Game 2. Ugly stuff. Still waiting for Reggie Sanders to get a hit.

Anyway. Through multiple losing seasons, a few too many managers, some of the worst uniforms I’ve ever seen (white pinstrip hats? No thanks. I never liked those things) a brilliant run in 1999 capped with a late night vigil in a Norwood BW3 watching the Reds beat the Brewers to force an 163rd game for the wild card berth and the next day getting tickets for the tiebreaker game the hat has been with me. Its shrunk quite a bit, fits pretty snugly on my head and is mostly falling apart. The button on top is long gone and there are plastic spines I have to trim otherwise they painfully poke me in the head.

I love it.

No drop shadow on the wishbone C here. Old school.

However, I really want a new hat. And pretty damn soon I’m allowed to get one.

Go Reds.

(I was hoping to report back on the scene from San Diego where I witnessed the Reds clinch their first division title since 1995. No such luck. However, it was my best year in California so far with a 5-2 record. I’d rather not say what the overall California numbers are.)

Venti, Tall and Grande

Venti, Tall and Grande

This was so good, we had to get it out of Twitter and on the site.

In a coincidence of cosmic proportions, we have one of the biggest human beings in modern sports, Shaquille O’Neal (Venti), chatting up Reds’ five-foot, six-inch reliever, Daniel Ray Herrera (Tall), while broadcaster George Grande (well, you get it) awkwardly standing to the side trying to interject something undoubtedly old-timey. The caption sums it all up nicely. Time for a coffee break…

Grand Salami: View from the cheap seats

Reds fans: You know it hurt. We all felt the pain when Manny connected. But, what a moment in sports – you can’t deny that.

Deep Into The Heart Of Mannywood

Manny Ramirez Bobblehead

LOS ANGELES– Well, I can’t say I didn’t see that coming. You just knew it would happen. Did I think he’d do it on the first pitch and drop it right into MANNYWOOD? Let’s not get crazy here.
That was a spectacular moment for 49,999 of the 50,000 fans in attendance. Still, it was an electric moment and I’ll be able to say I was there and I have the Bobblehead to prove it.

  • ABOUT THAT BOBBLHEAD:
    1. I could suspend it for 50 games and put it in the closet
    2. It could demand a trade from the bookshelf to the top of the TV
  • I’M REALLY, REALLY HAPPY: That i’m not going to Dodger Stadium tonight. People with season tickets to baseball have got to be insane. I’m dead tired. Maybe its more fun when your team wins. Someone will have to tell me about that.
  • I AGREE WITH DAVE: The season is over. The big question now is will they get above .500 or be doomed to another losing season? I think the latter. Let the fire-sale begin. Too early you say? I think 94 games is a sufficient sample size to determine a pattern and the pattern is no clutch hitting and inconsistent everything.
  • DID YOU NOTICE? How blogger makes it looks like it says “Posted by MIKE_R AT.” Good by me, I’ll take it as a shout out to my Ludlow roots.
  • THANKS! For the OMG crew for letting me join the team. It was fun.

How Could I Forget?

Lorenzo Lamas “sang” the national anthem. It was as bad as you can imagine.

Dodger Dogging It

LOS ANGELES– I defend baseball quite a bit. Too boring they say and i concede to them it can be a little dull in spots, but I tell them, “When its great there is nothing better.” The tension and excitement can be so intense you want to explode. I long for that feeling again, because my Reds just don’t have it in them anymore.

I swear this team needs a group heart transplant. Where is the pride? 0 for their last 11 at Dodger Stadium? Man up and get a win. This is pathetic.

Until this team has someone who takes losing personally and gets on his teammates things won’t change. A small market team can’t hang with the big boys on talent alone. Smaller teams need an edge and that edge is attitude and a killer instinct. Not coasting into 2nd and getting thrown out.

NOTES FROM THE TOP DECK (AKA BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE FOR THE PRICE)

• CHEAP AND GOOD: Shh. Don’t tell anyone. Top Deck seats at Dodger Stadium are $9. They are also very good seats. Much better than higher priced seats closer to the action. Close isn’t always better. Sure, i’d like to sit lower stadium behind home plate, those seats are great, but middle deck…down the line are terrible seats and much more expensive. I was a top-six guy at Riverfront and a Top Deck guy at Dodger Stadium.

• FOREIGN EXCHANGE: I bought my ticket the day they went on sale. So did 250 people in a group of foreign exchange families. I was surrounded by German kids, Brazilians, Canadians, and a adorable Finnish girl who sat next to me and was quiet as a church mouse. It was actually pretty fun. I asked to be adopted as foreign exchange student from Cincinnati. They were having a great time and i’m pretty sure none of them were watching the game.

• SUNSET: The sunset view from the stadium was about 500X better than the game.

• CAN YOU GUESS THE ANSWER?: My Cracker Jack prize dropped a little knowledge on me.

• I’M NOT VERY NICE: I enjoyed it when Homer plunked Man-Ram. I was hoping a fight would break out b/c that was the only way to salvage that mess.

This guy here was recording his own play by play. Really.

• ONE CAN HOPE: Will tonight’s Manny Bobblehead come with a syringe?

New Day, Same Result

LOS ANGELES– I had a feeling this would happen. The Reds jump out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first against a guy who hasn’t thrown a major league pitch in 2 years. They had him on the ropes. This could be their night. It wasn’t even their inning. Dodgers get 4 in the bottom f the first to take the lead…and they never looked back.
The Reds made some noise later, but no one in the stands seemed to think it was going anywhere…they were right.

Some keen sharp-witted observations from the Left Field Pavillion.

• STATE OF CHEER:
Californians (at least SOUTHERN Californians) are all cheerleaders inside. They love to cheer. Yell. Whatever. Chant. Clap. Its like a stadium full of kindergarteners. They started the wave in the 2nd inning….They were bored by the 2nd inning! Some believe i’m just a cranky midwesterner. Guilty.

• BEACH BALLS. I HATE BEACH BALLS: So, the game is so dull you have to amuse yourself with beachballs. Fine, whatever. Have fun…oh wait., the beach ball might be smacked in my face by a some kid or worse…an adult that never grew up? Great. So even if i want to ignore the beach ball I have to be on guard for it?
2 years ago I grabbed one and gave it to the security guard who disposed of it. EVERYONE boo’d. Proudest moment of my life.
• LIGHTEN UP, FRANCIS: Ok, its not that bad and i’m not that cranky. One thing I love about California is they are head over heels in love with Baseball. Lots of people play and tons of big time players come from here. I can respect that.

• DODGER STADIUM IS GREAT: Its old, it lacks luxury boxes (it has some, but not what a team in LA should have) and the parking is $15, but the setting is grand, the views are spectacular and the weather (normally) is perfect. Later this summer i’ll head to Aneheim to compare.

• TONIGHT WILL BE DIFFERENT: I hope. My seats tonight are behind home plate in the uppper, upper deck. Still, not bad for $9. I have an aversion to paying too much for tickets. I go for quantity over quality. Hopefully Homer can continue to shine and shut these clowns down. I need a win.

Photos from Mannywood

I’ll be posting photos coming off the wire from our stringer out west…. stay tuned…

Also… great photos coming in tonight from all kinds of folks on Twitter: @ilovelayncenix, @m_sheldon and @jimdaytv.

Nice view… Crappy game (so far)

I Need A Win

Since i moved here in July 2006 I’ve seen the Reds play at Dodger Stadium nine time (nine times?!)- The Reds have won exactly zero games in Chavez Ravine (my overall record of Reds watching as a Californian is 1-14. The lone victory was last year when Bronson Arroyo beat the Padres.
Other hi-lights of a disastrous career have been seeing Votto leave the game in Arizona and San Diego with dizziness/stress. Watching the Reds lose in 18 innings last year in San Diego and watching them lose again in 16 innings this year. I enjoyed the bonus baseball, but it really stinks when they lose.
Good thing I’m not superstitious.
despite the record i’m stoked to be going to the lovely Dodger stadium these next three days. Its truly a wonderful venue. High on a hill with a great view of the city. Its old school.
I will need to leave for the 7:10 game just before 5 pm if i don’t want to spend the first three innings in traffic.
More updates to come.

West Coast Trip

West Coast
The team here at OMGreds would like to welcome our newest addition – West Coast Correspondent, Mike.

Our good friend Mike is out in LA these days, listening or watching the Reds every night, just as any displaced, die-hard Reds fan would do. He’s also a bigger Reds Killer than the Bill Hall. We’ll have to confirm his record while attending Reds games out west, but we do know it ain’t pretty. Mike did redeem himself this year by attending a few games in Arizona when the Reds swept the Diamondbacks early in the season. So, things are looking up.

Mike will be throwin’ down all three Reds games in Los Angeles this week and will be taking the helm here at OMGreds. We have no clue what he’s going to post… just the way we like it.
