Bases Loaded

'Charlie Hustle' by Brian Lindstrom

If you haven’t checked it out yet, make sure you take a gander at the Eephus League Magazine Issue No 1. It’s a beautiful mix of baseball history, nostalgia, quirkiness, design and typography. OMGreds geeks out on all of the above.

We do want to highlight one particular segment of the magazine for you. Graphic designer/printer Brian Lindstrom has done a brilliant set of prints for his MA degree installation and exhibition, “Bases Loaded” at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. All hand done, the prints “explore the relationship between typography and image. These designs narrate milestones and key figures in America’s Pastime, Baseball.”

A little more information about In The Gap Shirts:

“In The Gap Shirts” was launched on May 17th with one simple idea, “make a difference.” In making a difference we want to impact lives in a positive way. We aim to bring you unique T-shirts that when purchased help raise money that at four points in the year we give to charitable organizations. The donation months are January, April, July and October. We are not affiliated with any specific charities nor are we a charity ourselves. We know how important trust is in instances like these so we will always be as transparent as we can be. The main motivation in the life of “In The Gap Shirts” is to honor the life Donna Neale, who passed away June 5th after battling cancer and other ailments. Her life was met with many struggles and pain but through it all she would give to those that she could to give them a better life. Her life left a great impression on those who knew exactly what she had been through. It has only been a short time since her passing but her effects will be felt for many years.

In The Gap aims to remain flexible with the charities they will make charitable contributions to. They have supported Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in the past and are looking to donate to Nationwide Children’s in Columbus, Ohio next.

Of course, you can help by purchasing a raffle ticket or by picking a t-shirt or two at inthegap.spreadshirt.com.

Speaking of Sam LeCure and charity, he’s growing out his ‘stache again for Charity. Check out his Movember page and throw a few bucks towards the cause. Go Sam!

The Banks Mural Dedication

The Banks Mural

The Banks Mural

Heads up that the official dedication of The Banks Mural is Tuesday, September 20. We posted a few progress pics back in June of mural and we’re excited for the dedication. More excited for this than say, Toby Keith’s bar, “Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill” which is um… not open.

Alright, here’s the good word from the fine folks at the ArtWorks, the Taft Museum of Art and Carter…

Come Celebrate with Us!

The boy in the Taft Museum of Art’s painting The Cobbler’s Apprentice by Frank Duveneck has put away his cigar and shoemaking supplies in exchange for a baseball bat in the mural located in Cincinnati’s new downtown neighborhood, The Banks. ArtWorks’ young Apprentice Artists have also put down their painting supplies after working hard on this mural and we want to celebrate their success with them!
Join us before the Reds vs. Astros game for our ceremony, some refreshments, baseball players from the Cincinnati Red Stockings, and an appearance from a very special guest!

When:
Tuesday, September 20
Dedication: 5 pm

Where:
The Mural Site

If you’ve been anywhere near the ballpark the past few months, you have seen The Banks project spring up from the hole that Riverfront Stadium left to create some semblance of a neighborhood. It’s been great to watch and with the addition of just the Holy Grail it’s been a heck of a lot of fun for many Reds fans. While things are taking shape architecturally, there is a nice surprise on on of the large walls just off of Walnut street – a massive mural is being created before our eyes. The state that it’s currently in doesn’t lend itself to many clues, but just around the corner from the mural a couple of renderings are posted in a window. It turns out that the mural is based on famous Cincinnati artist, Frank Duveneck’s The Whistling Boy (1872), one of his most celebrated paintings.

If you look closely at the original painting, the mural artists have taken the boy’s arm, turned it up and placed a baseball bat in his hand. Pretty nifty work right there.

Check out some of the pics I snapped over the weekend. We’ll have to grab a few more as the mural gets closer to completion. What a great addition to The Banks!

Many of Duveneck’s paintings can be seen at The Cincinnati Art Museum, as well as Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston – not too shabby.

419two

Any one out there going to the 4192: The Crowning of the Hit King premier at AMC Newport on the Levee tonight? Unfortuntaley, we’re missing it due to our already demanding public appearance schedule. We’ll see it in due time though, and let you know what we think. Oh, just a heads up – tickets are sold out.

4192 had its premier premier last week out in La, and even took home 1st place at the All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival.

On that subject, Cincinnati Pop Artist Andrew VanSickle has released a 4192-inspired art print, “Pete Rose” today alongside to coincide with tonight’s premiere.

Pete Rose 4192 limited edition art print

Pete Rose 4192

From the Facebook invite to watch its live debut on Fox 19 this morning:

Cincinnati Pop Artist Andrew VanSickle and “4192″ Movie Director Terry Lukemire discuss the just released “Pete Rose 4192″ Limited Edition Print on live Television with Rob Williams.

It’s been 25 years, since Andy Warhol’s portrait of the Hit King…now it’s time for the AVS ART version!

We haven’t seen it in person, so it’s tough to fully judge… but if you’re going to throw a nod to Andy Warhol with this thing, the print could have been a bit more inspired. Just our opinion though.

The prints, limited to 250, are available for purchase online at the 4192 Movie website.

Redsland Forever

C.F. Payne - Redsland Forever
Looking for a Redlegs fix? Head up to the Cincinnati Art Museum on Thursday, November 12 for the unavailing of a limited edition art print by Cincinnati artist C.F. Payne. Redsland Forever features fourteen illustrated caricatures of Cincinnati Reds legends spanning 140 years of Reds baseball, including Eric Davis, Chris Sabo, Joe Nuxhall and members of the Big Red Machine.

The event at the Art Museum is free and features an informal lecture from the artist. If that’s not enough to get you over the baseball blues now that the season is officially over, Chris Sabo himself will be meeting and greeting with guests before the lecture. Nice!

Signed & framed ($250) as well as unsigned ($50) prints will be available at the event. Proceeds from sale of these prints will benefit the Reds Community Fund’s baseball-themed outreach programs and the Cincinnati Art Museum. More at Reds.com

We’re thinking of heading to the event. The Cincinnati Art Museum is always a great place to visit. Combine that with the Reds and some cocktails and we’ll more than likely show up.

Check out more of C.F. Payne’s work on his website: www.cfpayne.com. Payne’s illustrations have graced the covers of many magazines, from Time Magazine to Sports Illustrated and even MAD Magazine. He has been commissioned to paint countless politicians, authors and entertainers. Works by Mr. Payne’s hang in many prestigious museums and galleries around the world. If you’re like us, check out the sports section in his portfolio. You’ll likely enjoy his subject matter and style.

If you do make it to the event next week, make sure to stick around and view more of Payne’s work, as he has an exhibit up at the Cincinnati Art Museum through January 10, 2010.

In summing up the inspiration for Redsland Forever, C. F. Payne said:

In making this picture, “Redsland Forever,” I have tried to capture a sliver of the spirit, pride and love Cincinnati has for our Redlegs. We are America’s first professional team. The 140-year history of the Cincinnati Reds has given so many in our community thrills, joy, heartbreak, pandemonium, sadness, happiness, glee, suffering, amazement and good times with the kids. The Cincinnati Reds also have given us players we have come to know and admire. The affection for this team is real.

I love baseball. I love the history of baseball. And, I love the Cincinnati Reds.

Reds included in the print: Harry Wright, Barry Larkin, Johnny Vander Meer, Eric Davis, Chris Sabo, Ernie Lombardi, Paul Derringer, Ewell Blackwell, Joe Morgan, Sparky Anderson, Joe Nuxhall, Tony Perez, Johnny Bench, Ted Kluzewski.
