Goodbye Junior.

Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox
Here’s the latest:

Ken Griffey Jr. agreed Thursday to accept a trade to the Chicago White Sox, pending the approval of the commissioner, an indication that it involves a cash transaction of more than $1 million. The approval is expected to be a formality.

CBSSports.com is citing anonymous sources who say the Reds will get infielder Danny Richar and right-handed pitcher Nick Masset in the deal, and the Reds will also pay most of the remaining $4 million on Griffey’s contract.

Reds manager Dusty Baker says the White Sox initiated the deal.

The White Sox reportedly intend to play the 38-year-old Griffey in center field, a position he hasn’t played since 2006.

Griffey is earning $12.5 million this season in the final year of a nine-year deal. He is owed more than $4 million in salary, plus a $4 million buyout for 2009.

Griffey, as a 10-and-5 player (10 years of MLB service, five with the same club), has the right to block any deal.

The White Sox also attempted to acquire Griffey from the Reds at the trade deadline in 2005, but the trade reportedly was nixed by Reds ownership for financial reasons.

Griffey is batting .245 this season with 15 home runs and 53 runs batted in. He hit career home run No. 608 Wednesday in Houston. He is one home run shy of tying Sammy Sosa for fifth place on the all-time home run list.

Junior night

I have to say, the Griffey banner at GABP is pretty nice. It’s DAMN big. It’s also great to have a Reds player bring portrayed bigger than life at the stadium. You can see the damn thing all the way across downtown! Say what you will about his career here in Cincinnati, but he has been a great asset to the game from day one.

Congrats to Griffey… he deserves it.

More photos from Griffey night are up on the photo blog.

It’s always fun when historic stuff happens… not only do you get to witness (or at least watch on TV) history, but you also get SWAG! You know what we are all about here at OMGreds… SWAG. So, here are the deets about freebies associated with Griffey’s 600th, contrary to what Cincinnati.Com posted earlier today. Contrary to that report (which is now updated) there will be no Junior freebie tonight.

$1500 in Pennies

Ken Griffey Jr., and a locker full of pennies

Just came across this gem of a story. Apparently Ken Griffey Jr owed Josh Fogg $1500 and paid him completely in pennies. Outstanding! Just another reason why Griffey is my favorite player. Hey Griff, if you have another 150,000 pennies lying around you’re more than welcome to send them my way.

OK, what’s the deal, Griff? I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but you’ve been homerless for, like, two weeks now. Your hitting’s up a little bit (of course, anything is better than that freakin’ .238 batting average) but I put you on my team for some power. The rest of my team mostly picks up hits and caught stealings. Oh, and speaking of that – why did you try to steal a base yesterday? That was crazy.

Remember that one week when you hit two home runs? I really liked that. My advice is to do something like that again.

Oh, and what’s this crap about being traded? You’re the only representative from the Reds I have on my team! I felt the need to represent Cincinnati with the only player I remember from when I last followed baseball (that said, I’m glad I didn’t pick my other “veteran” options – Sheffield or Thomas). Maybe I shoulda picked up a fancy new Red like Keppinger or Volquez instead. Hey, I didn’t want to say it, but these are dire times…

I know the Reds are already off to a rough start, but maybe now you can focus on the people who pretend to own you on their fake teams. OK, that’s my pep talk. Thanks for hearing me out.
