Information from Cincy Card Shows:

Thanks for all your support over the last few signings with Cozart and Frazier as we look to keep bringing in guys for you to meet. With hearing of Pedro Borbon’s passing we have put together an event that has already started gaining a lot of attention. Ken Broo has already picked up the story and will play Pedro Borbon’s interview that we set up for him in April on his show Sunday as well as talk to Steve about Monday nights event. The following is what went out this morning to local news and radio.

Cincinnati, June 07, 2012: As most of you know by now the City of Cincinnati lost a great man this week with the passing of Pedro Borbon. Pedro was a great friend to us and had done several autograph signings over the past few years at our Moeller High School sports card and memorabilia shows. We were lucky enough to be able to bring him in a little over a month ago April 27th and April 28th to spend time with us and the many collectors that showed up to meet him.

When Pedro came in to town for us 5 years ago for the first time he asked if we could pay him the same amount whether he drove or took us up on a plane ticket. We agreed and he packed up the family and drove 1800 miles from the Mexico border with his wife Maria and kids. With this in mind as soon as we heard about his passing we decided we were going to do a fund raiser for Maria and the kids.

Monday, June 11th at Moeller High School we will be having a sports memorabilia sale and Homer Bailey autograph signing. Included in the sale will be Pedro Borbon signed 8×10′s that he did for us at his last signing. The sale will begin at 6:00 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. and the Homer Bailey signing will go from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A portion of all sales will go to the Borbon family. Moeller High School is located at 9001 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

At the event we will also accept donations for the family. If anyone can’t attend the event but would still like to contribute to the Borbon family you can send a check make out to Maria Borbon to Steve Schell, 601 Eagle View Drive, Mason, Ohio 45040.

Thank you for everyone’s time and please let us know if you need any other information.

We hope to see you tomorrow Monday JUNE 11th!

On a side note, I had the pleasure of meeting Pedro on several occasions the past few years and he couldn’t have been any nicer. I even made it to his recent autograph signing at the Moeller Card Show back in April. It was great to see him, nice to get an autograph and wonderful to just to say hello. In 2010, I met his family at the Reds Hall of Fame Gala. They are a wonderful family and it was an honor getting to know them a little bit. I was saddened to hear that we lost Pedro last week and behalf of all of OMGreds, our thoughts and prayers go out to the Borbon family.

Reds Winter CaraVan Hagar: Columbus

2011 Reds Winter Caravan - Columbus

Dusty Baker, Chris Welsh, Homer Bailey and Todd Frazier signing autographs on the Columbus stop of the 2011 Reds Caravan

Alright, Van Hagar is a HUGE stretch, but I somehow had to tie in my inability to “Drive 55*” while heading up 71 North for the final stop of the Northern Leg of the 2011 Reds Winter Caravan. I was nailed doing 85 in a 65. My excitement for the Reds and malls in general could not be contained.

As for the Caravan, like all of the rest of the stops, attendance was up significantly. It was estimated that over 600 folks were taking in the festivities at Polaris Fashion Place just north of Downtown Columbus.

While standing in line, I was unable to hear anything from the stage at the center of the mall. I’m not sure if they did a Q&A, but if they did, it was short and they got on with the autograph line pretty quickly. From my spot, maybe 250 folks from the front, I was able to move through in under an hour and a half. I was really happy to finally add Homer Bailey to my autograph collection. He’s one of the few guys on the team I haven’t been able to track down between Redsfest and other events. Along with Homer, I snagged sigs from Todd “The Situation” Frazier, Chris Welsh and Dusty Baker for my son and myself. Dusty did a very nice personalization on my son’s baseball card. That will be a special card in his little collection. Thank you, Dusty!

All-in-all it was a nice reason to take a little road trip with the family and remedy the winter blues. It’s always great seeing the folks we know with the Reds and Cincinnati USA as well as getting some autographs.

*Yes, yes yes, I know Sammy Hagar did that song solo, but CaraVan Hagar was too good to pass up. Will you let it slide this time?

Homerhead

Homer Bailey Bobblehead

Homer Bailey Bobblehead

The fans had the choice, and they made it. Homer Bailey is your 2010 Fans Choice Bobblehead, beating out a smattering of other Reds that had yet to be honored with a ceramic likeness: Orlando Cabrera, Francisco Cordero, Johnny Cuteo, Chris Dickerson, Ramon Hernandez, Arthur Rhodes and Drew Stubbs.

Homer’s Bobblehead will be given to the first 30,000 fans in attendance on Saturday, July 31st. If you haven’t heard already, the start time for that game has been changed to 4:10 PM. So, adjust your plans accordingly.

We’ll admit, we never got our act together to give an official OMGreds endorsment for this year’s Fans Choice Bobblehead, so we really can’t say too much about what the fans decided. Buuuuuuuuuut, we would LOVE to know how close the voting was. Did Homer run away with it? Did Arthur get as much love as folks say he did? Did Drew make a Dent? Did Lando even make a run for it? And by run, we mean the Kessel Run and if he made it under 12 parsecs.

What do ya’ll think?

Also, if you haven’t heard, tickets for the Reds/Braves series this weekend are going pretty quickly. Just standing room only tickets for Saturday’s game were available on Wednesday afternoon. Those will certainly be snatched up before the weekend gets here, so act quickly.

Though there was a cleaver leak last month, it’s NOW official – the 2010 Reds Fan’s Choice Bobblehead is Homer Bailey. 30,000 bobbing Homers will be given out Saturday, July 31st as part of Fan’s Choice Weekend.

Hopefully Huntin’ Homer will be off the DL by time his bobblehead day comes. This rookie rotation can only take us so far.

Fans Choice Bobblehead: Homer?

Home says "YEEEEEEEEE-HAW!

YEEEEEEEEEE-HAW!

As far as we know, the Reds’ 2010 Fans Choice Bobblehead has not been announced, but the Reds may have leaked (on purpose?) its identity at the game Monday night.

Early in the ballgame, the in-game text question was along the lines of: “What 2010 Reds Bobblehead is your favorite?” The choices were: Scott Rolen, Chris Sabo or Homer Bailey.

Hmmm…

Will ‘Verducci Effect’ affect Homer?

The so-called Verducci Effect – named for SI.com’s Tom Verducci – tracks young pitchers who throw too much, too soon.

Any 25-and-under pitcher whose innings increase by more than 30 from one season to the next is said to be at risk.

In Verducci’s column posted Tuesday, he’s got Homer Bailey among his 10 pitchers at risk in 2010.

Here’s specifically what he said about Homer:

This is probably the most troubling case on this list, if only because there was no reason to lean so hard on Bailey down the stretch. The Reds finished 13 games out. In his last nine starts, Bailey averaged 112 pitches and was given an extra day of rest only twice even as he far exceeded his previous high in innings. The club kept leaning on him because he was pitching well, but to what end?

The thing is … Homer was so money down the stretch in 2009 – the guy allowed a TOTAL of 11 earned runs over his final 9 starts of the season – that I don’t think people gave it much thought. Do you buy it?
