You have to give Pete credit for what he's accomplished. He never went to college and the only book he ever read was the Pete Rose Story.

The Battler

Not sure when Homage released this puppy, but it’s straight up bad ass. Must have been pretty recent because OMGreds peruses Homage.com on the frequent searching for new steez.

A collab with Ripple Junction, this tee Pays Homage* to a shirt Pete rocked back in the day while drinking a coke, standing next to Joe Moran and his pants. Pete’s pants also had a starring role in the presentation.

We sport the other Pete Rose shirt available at Homage and get many, many compliments. We guarantee you’ll get the same results.

Bases Loaded

'Charlie Hustle' by Brian Lindstrom

"Charlie Hustle" by Brian Lindstom

If you haven’t checked it out yet, make sure you take a gander at the Eephus League Magazine Issue No 1. It’s a beautiful mix of baseball history, nostalgia, quirkiness, design and typography. OMGreds geeks out on all of the above.

We do want to highlight one particular segment of the magazine for you. Graphic designer/printer Brian Lindstrom has done a brilliant set of prints for his MA degree installation and exhibition, “Bases Loaded” at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. All hand done, the prints “explore the relationship between typography and image. These designs narrate milestones and key figures in America’s Pastime, Baseball.”

Bethany Heck of Eephus League crafted a wonderful interview with Brian in the Eephus League Magazine. We urge you to check it out.

Art prints, including the Pete Rose inspired design at the top of the post are available at society6.com. More information on the entire series and Brian’s exhibitions at www.basesloadedseries.com.

Pay Homage to the Smoothie -we mean- Hit King

In celebration of the Hit King’s 71st birthday our friends at Homage have released a killer Pete Rose shirt. 4192 never looked so good.

Hustle out and get yours

The fine folks (and cats) over at The Social Dept have put together a nice city-themed collection of tees dubbed “The City Series“. Cincinnati gets the call with this “City of Hustle” design featuring a three-way, a sixer of Hu-Dey beer and Charlie Hustle himself. OMGreds approved.

Pete Rose & Tom Seaver on the Mike Douglas Show in 1977

Tom Seaver and Pete Rose on the Mike Douglas Show, 1977

Tom Seaver and Pete Rose on the Mike Douglas Show, 1977

Talk-show host Mike Douglas interviews All-Star baseball players Pete Rose and Tom Seaver of the world-champion Cincinnati Reds on July 20th, 1977 (the show was broadcast one week later on July 27th).

This is one of helluva episode. Not only do Rose and Seaver appear on the show, but Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford are on the show promoting Star Wars. Epic.

There are four parts to the episode that originally aired on July 27, 1977, but we’ll embed just the parts that feature Rose and Seaver – 3 & 4. To check out all 4 parts, click here.

Tell you what, I always enjoy hearing Pete talk about baseball. Whatever about the rest of his thing, but when he talks about baseball, I’m down.

It’s almost bizarre to hear Rose and Seaver about a few particular things like, explaining free agency, Seaver’s trade from the Mets, Tony Perez being traded from the Reds to the Expos and Rose’s burgeoning career in endorsements and TV commercials. Of course, Mike Douglas tests Rose and Seaver at the end of the second segment to see if they are skilled product pitchmen.

Also, Pete’s chain is legit. Ya best recognize.

Pete Rose 'Never bet on baseball' inscribed autographed baseball card

Wow

None of us should be surprised, right?

So get this, Leaf (they’re still around?) has released an entire set of baseball cards featuring Pete Rose. AN ENTIRE SET. Entitled Pete Rose Legacy, the set features autographs with plenty of inscriptions and game-used pieces (a bat and a game-used Montreal Expos jersey were used). If you’re a Pete Rose freak, sounds like you’re going to love this set. Each box includes at least one Rose autograph, so you’re guaranteed a little sum sum from Charlie Hustle.

Hits* from the Pete Rose Legacy set have been hitting** eBay with the “Never bet on baseball” inscription being the grand-daddy of them all, if you ask us. Sure, there cards that are even more scare (1/1s), but this inscription takes the cake.

The folks over a Top Prospect Alert Minor League Blog (say that 3x fast) have compiled a list of in-scripted cards that have hit eBay recently.

By the way, get this – One lucky collector will pull a redemption card for a personal hitting lesson with Pete Rose. We also hear that you get to go hat shopping with Pete too!

Hit King in the ‘burbs

Sports Gallery just opened a few weeks ago on Cincinnati Dayton Road in West Chester and what better way to celebrate than to welcome a certain former Red who will most assuredly not be appearing at RedsFest.

Pete will be at Sports Gallery this Wednesday (Nov. 17) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and tickets are reasonably priced and on sale now (though they are limited so don’t wait too much longer). Get a flat item/baseball/mini helmet signed for $50, or a bat/jersey/other equipment signed for $75. And all autographs include one free inscription, such as Hit King, 4192, 4256, 1973 MVP, 1963 ROY, 1975 & 76 WS Champs, etc. And there are items available for sale at Sports Gallery if you don’t currently have something you really want to get signed. In fact, leave yourself plenty of time to browse while you’re there … they’ve got some pretty impressive items you’ll want to check out!

For more info about tickets, visit www.asportsgallery.com or call 513-759-4256. (Pretty cool, too, that they got 4256 as the last four digits, huh?)

What the big boys eat

Hadn’t seen this one before. We’re thinkin’ you haven’t either. Too bad Pete wasn’t in this Wheaties commercial.

Dinner with Pete

Question is, will Tom Gill be chaperoning?

419two

Any one out there going to the 4192: The Crowning of the Hit King premier at AMC Newport on the Levee tonight? Unfortuntaley, we’re missing it due to our already demanding public appearance schedule. We’ll see it in due time though, and let you know what we think. Oh, just a heads up – tickets are sold out.

4192 had its premier premier last week out in La, and even took home 1st place at the All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival.

On that subject, Cincinnati Pop Artist Andrew VanSickle has released a 4192-inspired art print, “Pete Rose” today alongside to coincide with tonight’s premiere.

Pete Rose 4192 limited edition art print

Pete Rose 4192

From the Facebook invite to watch its live debut on Fox 19 this morning:

Cincinnati Pop Artist Andrew VanSickle and “4192″ Movie Director Terry Lukemire discuss the just released “Pete Rose 4192″ Limited Edition Print on live Television with Rob Williams.

It’s been 25 years, since Andy Warhol’s portrait of the Hit King…now it’s time for the AVS ART version!

We haven’t seen it in person, so it’s tough to fully judge… but if you’re going to throw a nod to Andy Warhol with this thing, the print could have been a bit more inspired. Just our opinion though.

The prints, limited to 250, are available for purchase online at the 4192 Movie website.

Can’t Knock the Hustle

Bonus points (+3ish) for the get-up

All you Pete fans out there! You may have missed the 4192 premiere out in LA last night, but you don’t have to miss out on this fabulous Charlie Hustle tee shirt from Watch Your Back. They may be New York City, but they know where the Hustle is.

If you’re looking for some new Pete Rose threads, now is the time to act. Watch Your Back is running a 25% off sale starting July 12-July 18 on all baseball-inspired shirts. There’s a killer Kent Tekulve shirt in there too… check it out.

Eh. Peter Edward being inducted into a baseball hall of fame

Celebrate
Say whaaaaa? Yeah, Pete’s going into a professional baseball hall of fame. Just not THAT ONE. You know, that counts? Supposedly?

Seems that ol’ Chuck Hustle is being inducted into the Shrine of the Eternals at The Baseball Reliquary.

Again, Saaaaay whaaaaaaaa?

Okay, what’s the deal here? Well, according to the philosophy of The Shrine of Eternals, Pete may be the perfect candiate for induction into the Monrovia, California based hall of fame:

The Shrine of the Eternals is similar in concept to the annual elections held at the Baseball Hall of Fame, but differs philosophically in that statistical accomplishment is not a criterion for election. Rather, the Shrine’s annual ballot is comprised of individuals – from the obscure to the well-known – who have altered the baseball world in ways that supersede statistics.

Rock on, Pete. Considering other baseball odd-balls like Bill “Spaceman” Lee, Doc Ellis and Bill Veek also grace the halls of the Shrine of the Eternals, he fits in well. What do we need to do to get Tony Mullane up in that mother?

It’s not all about Pete though, he’s got company. Three candidates are selected from each year’s Eternals ballot. The 2010 inductions also include Casey Stengel and Roger Angell, longtime baseball writer for The New Yorker.

Road Trip?
Oh, you want to go? Well then, here are the deets:

When: Sunday July 18, 2010

Time: 2:00 pm

Where: Donald R. Wright Auditorium, Pasadena Central Library, 285 E. Walnut St., Pasadena, CA. (Sounds fancy)

Admission: Free admission, yo.

More Info: Phone (626) 791-7647

Really though, I think I’d rather head out west to check out “LASORDAPALOOZA“. Tommy hates the Reds so much that it actually makes me like the guy. What passion!

Tip of the double ear flapper to ESPN 2.

Pete! Oh Yeah!

Ah man, this is awesome.

Reds Classic Rewind

Suck on this, Show!

FOX Sports Ohio is putting out a fresh (or, re-fresh?) batch of Reds Classic Rewinds to quench the Reds fans’ un-dying thirst for sitting in front of the tube and watching winning Reds baseball. Looks like we have a couple of repeats with the 2010 version of Reds Classic Rewind – and a notable lack of 1990 games, given the historical significance in this anniversary year.

Past Reds Classic Rewind line-up:
2009 line-up
2008 line-up

Here’s the 2010 line-up from FSN:

Hosts Thom Brennaman, Jeff Brantley and Jeff Piecoro take viewers on a trip through Reds history with archival games featuring the “Big Red Machine,” the return of the re-mastered 1976 NLCS game with Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall, the 1970 World Series Game 4, Browning’s perfect game, and more.

*Mon., Jan. 25th -10:30pm
On September 11, 1985, a sellout crowd at Riverfront Stadium and a national television audience were watching to see if Pete Rose could break Ty Cobb’s hit record. After going 0-for-4 the previous night, Rose didn’t disappoint. He hit a line drive single to left field off San Diego’s Eric Show on a 2-1 pitch for hit No. 4,192.

*Mon., Feb. 1st – 8pm
On October 22, 1975, the Reds faced the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of what has been ranked one of the best World Series ever. The “Big Red Machine” won it in the ninth to clinch the first of back-to-back World Series championships.

*Mon., Feb. 8th – 8pm
After 11 big league years, Tom Seaver was finally able to cross off one of the few achievements that had eluded him in his magnificent career with his only no-hitter on June 16, 1978.

*Mon., Feb. 15th – 8pm
A two-hour, 27-minute rain delay didn’t halt Tom Browning, who retired all 27 Los Angeles Dodgers he faced in a 1-0 victory on September 16, 1988. Browning concluded the only perfect game in Reds history by retiring Rick Dempsey on a fly to deep right field, Steve Sax on a grounder to shortstop and Tracy Woodson on a strikeout. A throwing error accounted for the Reds’ only run.

Mon., Feb. 22nd – 8pm
We’re bringing back the re-mastered version of the classic Reds game from October 12, 1976, when the Reds swept the Phillies in NLCS Game 3. This special telecast includes original video from NBC synced with the audio of Reds veteran duo Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall.

Mon., Mar.1st – 10pm (or following Cavaliers Live post-game show)
On October 14, 1970, the Reds faced Baltimore in Game 4 of the World Series. The Reds lost the series but won this game 6-5 thanks to clutch hitting by Lee May and stellar relief pitching by rookie Don Gullett and veteran Clay Carroll. Featuring a very young and upcoming Big Red Machine, this game is one of the oldest known Reds games to exist in its entirety.

* denotes re-peat from a past Reds Rewind Classic series.
