Reds’ defensive gems

Now that we’re deep enough into the season that we’ve got some very strong candidates – including several from the past two weeks – we’re keeping a list of the absolute best defensive plays made by the Reds this season so that we can vote and post a top 10 at the end of the year. Here are the candidates (not necessarily locks) we’re considering so far. Please let us know if we’re forgetting any and we’ll add them. Or let us know if there are any you think are ho-hum.

6/3: Phillips’ diving catch in Houston

5/28: Stubbs’ snow-cone catch to rob Pedro Alvarez

5/26: Cozart dives to rob Tulowitzki

5/25: Cozart dives to rob Scutaro

5/23: Phillips’ flip from his back to Cozart to get out at second vs. Braves

5/21: Stubbs’ sliding catch in 9th vs. Braves

Reds day at the CIncy Zoo

If you happen to have the day off and are looking for something to do with the kids, you might want to consider Reds Day at the zoo. Among many activities, there will be a question an answer from noon to 1pm with Brandon Phillips, Drew Stubbs and Micah Owings. You can get all the details on the zoo’s website here.

Redsland Forever

C.F. Payne - Redsland Forever
Looking for a Redlegs fix? Head up to the Cincinnati Art Museum on Thursday, November 12 for the unavailing of a limited edition art print by Cincinnati artist C.F. Payne. Redsland Forever features fourteen illustrated caricatures of Cincinnati Reds legends spanning 140 years of Reds baseball, including Eric Davis, Chris Sabo, Joe Nuxhall and members of the Big Red Machine.

The event at the Art Museum is free and features an informal lecture from the artist. If that’s not enough to get you over the baseball blues now that the season is officially over, Chris Sabo himself will be meeting and greeting with guests before the lecture. Nice!

Signed & framed ($250) as well as unsigned ($50) prints will be available at the event. Proceeds from sale of these prints will benefit the Reds Community Fund’s baseball-themed outreach programs and the Cincinnati Art Museum. More at Reds.com

We’re thinking of heading to the event. The Cincinnati Art Museum is always a great place to visit. Combine that with the Reds and some cocktails and we’ll more than likely show up.

Check out more of C.F. Payne’s work on his website: www.cfpayne.com. Payne’s illustrations have graced the covers of many magazines, from Time Magazine to Sports Illustrated and even MAD Magazine. He has been commissioned to paint countless politicians, authors and entertainers. Works by Mr. Payne’s hang in many prestigious museums and galleries around the world. If you’re like us, check out the sports section in his portfolio. You’ll likely enjoy his subject matter and style.

If you do make it to the event next week, make sure to stick around and view more of Payne’s work, as he has an exhibit up at the Cincinnati Art Museum through January 10, 2010.

In summing up the inspiration for Redsland Forever, C. F. Payne said:

In making this picture, “Redsland Forever,” I have tried to capture a sliver of the spirit, pride and love Cincinnati has for our Redlegs. We are America’s first professional team. The 140-year history of the Cincinnati Reds has given so many in our community thrills, joy, heartbreak, pandemonium, sadness, happiness, glee, suffering, amazement and good times with the kids. The Cincinnati Reds also have given us players we have come to know and admire. The affection for this team is real.

I love baseball. I love the history of baseball. And, I love the Cincinnati Reds.

Reds included in the print: Harry Wright, Barry Larkin, Johnny Vander Meer, Eric Davis, Chris Sabo, Ernie Lombardi, Paul Derringer, Ewell Blackwell, Joe Morgan, Sparky Anderson, Joe Nuxhall, Tony Perez, Johnny Bench, Ted Kluzewski.

It only took 19 years

*UPDATERY*
Sorry for my inept attempt at writing an obscure sports fact. While the Reds and Bengals have won 11 times on the same day since 1990, the stat I heard was it was the first time since 1990 either time had won by 7 or more points. The Reds beat San Diego 9-2 on September 23, 1990. Weak, yes I know. I’m sure you’re booing me through the computer right now. Trust me I can hear it. Thanks for the heads up by the few peeps who pointed it out.

Can you believe it was 1990 since the last time the Reds and Bengals won on the same day? Yikes, right?

G-Rides

G Rides
Found this t-shirt with a logo inspired by the Reds’ brand mark.

G-Rides… and in Geronimo Rides? Nice.

Reds Interested in Halladay?

According to mlb.fanhouse.com the Cincinnati Reds have an attractive package for Halladay but his no trade clause could make him becoming a Red a problem.

Also thanks to mlbtraderumors for the link to fanhouse.

Whats That?

Gonzalez 100%

Looks like Alex Gonzalez will be ready to “participate at 100 percent” on Day 1 of spring training. According to reds.com, Dr. Tim Kremchek examined Gonzalez in Miami, FL putting him through a series of test and agility drills.

This is some surprising news considering a few months ago it didn’t sound like he was anywhere close to being ready for spring training. In 2007, Gonzalez batted .272 with 16 home runs and 55 rbis in 110 games. In comparison, Keppinger batted .266 with 3 home runs and 43 rbis in 121 games last year.

Batter Up!

Muse’s “Hysteria”, Weezer’s “My name is Jonas”, Radioheads “Just”, Bangals “Eternal Flame” really the list could go on for songs I’d walk out to if I happened to find myself in the lineup for a major league team. Ever wonder what a few of the Reds walk out to and why they chose that song? Well you are in luck that I came across this article on MLB.com. I’m a little disappointed though that they didn’t ask Freel why his jam has been “Tom’s Diner” the past few years.

$1500 in Pennies

Ken Griffey Jr., and a locker full of pennies

Just came across this gem of a story. Apparently Ken Griffey Jr owed Josh Fogg $1500 and paid him completely in pennies. Outstanding! Just another reason why Griffey is my favorite player. Hey Griff, if you have another 150,000 pennies lying around you’re more than welcome to send them my way.

Marty 1 – Cubs Fans 0

As I was driving home Wednesday night, I tuned into what was an absolute beating of a Reds game, and was I ever so glad I did! After Adam Dunn delivers a homerun ball into the streets of Chicago, Cubs fans threw 15 or so baseballs back onto the field. This would lead to probably the best 2 minutes of radio I have heard in a long time. Thank you Marty!
