2009 Allen & Ginter

2009 Topps Allen & Ginter Joey Votto

DATA: 2009 Topps Allen & Ginter (129)

ACQUIRED: checkoutmycards.com

PING: Back with a little more vintage for you. Lovin’ the Allen & Ginter series, but this one falls a little flat for me. I love the ultra-clean look of the first two years. While this is a nice nod to the 1880s N16 set from which the design was derived from, it’s just not my favorite of the A&G series. That said, it’s a vintage look and that usually trumps most of the modern sets for me.

2008 Topps Allen & Ginter Mini

DATA: 2008 Topps Allen & Ginter Mini (#129)

ACQUIRED: Trade from JayBee

PING: This A&G Mini comes courtesy of friendly card blogger and Cubs fan, JayBee. He’s hooked me up in the past as well. A couple of Redsfest cards went his way for his generosity.

Ah, the Allen and Ginter mini. It’s a beaut, eh? There is just something fun about these little modern day tobacco cards. Maybe it’s the same reason why people love Baby Ruth minis or the Mini Cooper. Small is fun. The A&G happens to be the regular back, just fyi.

PING: I have to say, I am a little disappointed in this card. The card stock is very thin and the finish is glossy – cheap glossy. I guess they are just fun insert cards, but it just doesn’t do much for me – and I love the Allen & Ginter sets that Topps has been putting out the past few years. Maybe that’s it – maybe if it were another design (‘73 Topps!!) it would have been a little better. I still would have been bummed about the physical attributes of the card, but the design would be unexpected. Since Joey already has a good looking Allen & Ginter card this year, it would have been nice to see something different.

2008 Topps Allen & Ginter

Joey Votto - 2008 Topps Allen & Ginter
DATA: 2008 Topps Allen & Ginter

ACQUIRED: Pulled from a box bust

PING: This is a badass card, don’t you agree? The new Allen & Ginter cards are pretty sweet and Votto’s card is classic. The only thing that would have made this card better would have been an action shot. Regardless, this one would be great for an autograph.
